MSRDC sets three-year target for Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor

Introduction: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has set an ambitious three-year target for the construction of the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor. This significant infrastructure project aims to connect Navghar on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Thane with Balavali in Raigad, traversing Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts. By improving connectivity and providing an alternative route, the corridor seeks to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance transportation infrastructure in Maharashtra.

Enhanced Connectivity and Traffic Relief: The Virar-Alibaug corridor combines a highway and metro line to offer improved connectivity and substantial traffic relief for motorists and logistics companies. One of its key benefits is bypassing the congestion-prone Thane city area, especially the heavily congested Ghodbunder Road. This development will greatly enhance mobility and convenience for commuters and transportation of goods.

Project Details: Under the engineering, procurement, and construction financial model, the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor is a mega project valued at ₹19,134.40 crore. It is divided into ten packages, covering a total distance of 96.41 km, which represents the initial phase of the larger 126 km multi-modal corridor. These packages encompass crucial infrastructure elements, including traffic control devices, road safety measures, interchanges, and comprehensive traffic and safety management systems.

Key Features and Infrastructure: To ensure efficient and safe transportation, the corridor will incorporate various essential elements. These include emergency telephones, surveillance cameras, toll plazas, patrolling services, variable message systems, landscaping, slope protections, Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), bus bays, and wayside amenities. Additionally, road-side furniture and infrastructure for townships will be developed, contributing to the overall convenience and functionality of the corridor.

Project History and Progress: Originally conceptualized in 2011 and under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Virar-Alibaug corridor was later transferred to the MSRDC. The corridor’s length was subsequently reduced by 14 km. Presently, the MSRDC is accepting applications from infrastructure companies to advance the project to the next stage, demonstrating significant progress and commitment towards its realization.

Land Acquisition and Cost Considerations: The first phase of the corridor requires the acquisition of approximately 1,347 hectares of land, resulting in a ten-fold increase in costs, estimated to be around Rs22,000 crore. Despite the challenges, the MSRDC remains dedicated to the successful implementation of this transformative project.

Conclusion: With the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor, the MSRDC aims to enhance transportation infrastructure and connectivity across Maharashtra. This ambitious undertaking will create a vital link between Navghar and Balavali, alleviate traffic congestion, and promote smoother mobility in the region. By providing an alternative route and improving connectivity, this corridor sets the stage for enhanced economic growth and development while improving the lives of the people of Maharashtra.
